How Music Supports a Service

Music during a memorial or celebration of life serves a different purpose than at other gatherings. It isn't meant to perform or impress. It's there to hold space rather than fill it—to soften transitions, to give people something to settle into when they first arrive, and to provide a gentle backdrop during moments of quiet or reflection.

Instrumental guitar works well in these settings because it's unobtrusive. There are no lyrics to interpret, no melodies that compete with conversation or ceremony. It simply provides warmth.

What to Expect

I arrive early, set up quietly, and begin playing before guests arrive. This helps establish a calm atmosphere from the start. During the service itself, I can play continuously as background, pause for readings or speakers, and resume as needed. I take cues from the officiant or family.

Volume is kept low—soft enough to allow conversation, present enough to fill silence comfortably. I bring a small, discreet speaker that blends into the setting and can be adjusted for any space.

Timing & Scheduling

Timing is planned in advance so there are no surprises on the day of the service. Before confirming, we'll discuss start time, approximate duration, and any specific moments where music should pause or resume. This clarity helps the day go smoothly for everyone.

Religious and Secular Services

I'm comfortable playing for services of all kinds—Catholic masses, Protestant church services, Jewish memorial gatherings, non-religious celebrations of life, and private family moments. The repertoire adapts to what's appropriate: traditional hymns, classical pieces, Spanish guitar, or simply quiet instrumental music without any particular association.
